Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

Split or Joint Custody Requirments

My spouse and I divorced in Dec 2000. We have joint custody of our 3 children and she has sole physical custody. My 14 year old son wants to live with me and his mother has agreed to this on a one year temporary basis.Am i required to obtain a lawyer and file a modification of custody and child support document or can I just get her and my attorney to draft a letter stating the change in custody and child support and then send it to the court? If I have to file a modification...is there a proper way to do it without involving an attorney?
