Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Alabama

Recording conversations

If I'm having a conversation with someone is it legal for me to record with a tape recorder that conversation without that persons knowledge? I'm having a conflict with someone and every time we talk he has someone with him who later backs him up on any claims he makes concerning what was said or any denials of things said whether or not they are true. I don't know how to protect myself against this and get the truth out. If I bring a friend he refuses to talk. I don't want to do anything illegal, I just want a way to prove he said what he said and prove I didn't say what he says I did.

Re: Recording conversations

It is my understanding that in Alabama as long as one party to the conversation consents, the conversation may be recorded. In other words, if you consent, you may record it. Another method of documenting what you want to document is to send a letter via certified mail to the individual stating that this is my understanding of our conversation on such and such date. If you do not agree with this understanding, please notify me in writing by such and such date. A reasonable person would respond.
