In order to qualify for SS disability, your condition must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least 12 months. However, because the Social Security process can sometimes take as long, or longer, than 2 years, I would suggest that you go ahead and file your application for benefits and pursue an appeal if you continue to be unable to work. If you then able to return to work before 12 months have elapsed, you can always dismiss your claim; however, if you do not file now you could risk a loss of benefits should you remain disabled.
