i dont know where to start. i am the executor of the will

So sorry for your loss. If your dad lived in Alabama, the first place to start is to get the original Will and any codicils to it. A local lawyer would be needed to "probate" the estate, which means that the Will, codicils and various petitions are processed through the Probate Court in the county where he lived. The process takes at least six months. Your involvement as executor could be significant or marginal, depending upon the complexity of the estate.

Call the bar association or look in the phone book for lawyers in the area who do probate. Call around.
