Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Alaska

Hi,

I got into a physical fight recently, as someone attacked me at a supermarket and I fought back. I requested for the cops to be called and when they came, I was told that I couldn't press charges or have the person arrested because I had no "visible" injury. I was given a case # and was told that if I wanted to take further legal action, at least I will have the incident recorded. I want to know if I was given the right information from the cops and also what legal action could I take in the future with this?

It appears to me that the police meant to tell you that they would not charge your assailant with a crime because they didn't have enough evidence.

This doesn't mean that you can't press civil charges (sue for money damages). Were you injured? Did you incur medical expenses, etc? If not, it's probably not worth while pursuing.
