Legal Question in Appeals and Writs in Arizona

A person goes to a store to do an exhchange. The line is too long and he does not want to wait. He places item to be exchanged (case of beans) in a cart thinking it will be shelved, but it is for donations. He takes the other case towards the store doors, but does not leave. He is stopped and arrested for shoplifing. I now need to appeal. What can the issues be? What case laws or statutes can I use to help get him off? Oh and he is in a hurry because he is afraid of his wife's anger and so that is why he did not take the time to do the proper exchange.

Appeals are about what happened at trial more than the underlying facts. You haven't told us anything about what happened at trial, including what charges he was convicted of. Without better information there is no way to offer any guidance.

There are strict deadlines for appeals. Your friend needs to make sure he starts the appeal before time runs out.

Note also that only a lawyer can represent your friend, unless he opts to represent himself (a very bad idea). You asked what you can do, but unless you're a lawyer you can only assist behind the scenes.
