Legal Question in Business Law in Arizona

Hours cut without notice.

I work as an independent contractor (without a contract) for an Urgent Care clinic. I had a verbal and written (unsigned schedule) agreement for the hours I was to work for July 2009. This particular schedule involved a full week of calculations and discussion before it was finalized.

Mid-month I was told that effective immediately, these hours were no longer available. The office claimed economic hardship.

Do I have any rights regarding the promised hours / lack of notice for change?

Thanks so much!

Re: Hours cut without notice.

Possibly. Contracts for less than one year for services do not have to be in writing, and "in writing" means some written evidence of the deal, e.g. a receipt or check, not necessarily a formal contract. Here, you may have checks and the schedule which show there was some agreement. The court would then allow "parol" evidence, i.e. other evidence, to determine the terms of the deal. Problems: (1.) Attys fees greater than amount and (2) burn your bridges? Contact Tom in our office if you would like to discuss retaining us. Thanks. P.S. Many workers are really employees which is huge lever if you work for no one else.
