My husband was out of work for a year, one of our collectors did not care and would not work with us as far as payment arrangments,so they are taking us to court and I received a letter saying application for default what do I do now we have 10 days to respond.

You need to file an answer to the suit and send a copy to the plaintiff's lawyer. If you don't answer, you will lose by default and they will get a judgment against you. When they have a judgment, they can garnish your wages and bank accounts. You should really talk to a lawyer about this.
