In Arizona, is it necessary to use a property management company to handle my rental if I live in California?

It is not required, but it would be much more difficult. You could pay an individual to lease and maintain the property for you, you don't have to hire a management company, but the answer depends upon the type of property, location, quality of tenant, how rent is paid, how do you know if the tenant moves out or does damage to the property, etc. etc.
