Do I need to hire an attorney in the state my mothers estate is being settled to represent me or can I hire one where I live?

It would depend on what you're trying to accomplish. Are you looking for an attorney to probate the estate, file an action against the personal representative, or something else?

You need an attorney in the state where the probate action is to take place. Regardless of what you want to accomplish, only an attorney in the state of the probate action can represent you in that court.
