Short term loan issues

I have a friend that has an issue with online short term loans. Are their any legal procedures that can be done against him because he can't pay the loan back? Can they garnish his checks? Basically what can happen to him if he can't pay the loans back?

He can be sued for default of the loan contract. If they obtain a judgment, they can garnish his pay and/or collect against his property.
