Police executing a search warrant do not have to wait for the occupants of a home to return. They often have no way to know when (or even if) that will happen, and many investigations are time-sensitive. Additionally, there are only so many police officers in any department; an officer who must wait around for the occupants to return cannot be out on patrol or investigating other crimes.
