Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
My former apartment building is charging my roommate and I with damages ($10,000) that we are not taking responsibility for. Since we have not paid for these charges, the apartment said that they are forwarding our file to outside collections. Since my roommate and I are on the lease together (the lease has since ended), will the amount that we are being charged for be divided by half once it reaches collections ($5,000 each)? Or will the amount that appears on each of our collection claim be the full amount, $10,000? Thank you.

It will show as a joint and several liability, meaning it will show as each of you owing $10,000.

you will be jointly responsible for the 10k since you are both signatories of the lease.
