What are good resources to see get the pros and cons of placing a personal residence in a separate trust from the rest of your assets? Are there good options outside of QPRT?

If the goal is to save estate (or gift) taxes, the only reasonable option is a QPRT.... and only a residence can be placed in a QPRT, so it must be kept separate from the rest of your assets.
