Legal Question in Family Law in California

The mother of my child moved to Iowa a few years ago and she wants child support. I live in California- how will that work and how can I make sure there is a fair deal? I am also planning on marrying soon and don't know how this will impact my spouse?

If the mother and child reside in Iowa, then jurisdiction may be there rather than California. More information is needed to answer your question.

I am assuming she took the child with her to Iowa. Since you has been gone for a few years I am sure jurisdiction is going to be in Iowa. If they are like California you will receive a notice to which you will need to respond. You may be able to contact an attorney in your area and have him contact an attorney in Iowa so you do not have to make frequent trips for court appearances.

I had a similar case in Alaska and the client appeared to curt dates via telephone with the Alaska attorney making the appearance in Alaska.
