Legal Question in Disability Law in California

Use of Florida ADA Placard in California

I recently traveled to CA from FL for a family reunion. I carried my FL Handicap placard. I am 82 w/two titanium knees and a hip replacement. I use a cane for extra support.

My niece who lives in CA picked me up at the train station in L.A. and we met other family members for dinner in Burbank CA. I encouraged her to park in handicap parking and we suspended the Florida handicap placard from the rearview mirror.

When we returned to her car after dinner, we found a $325 ticket for not having a CA handicap placard.

Re: Use of Florida ADA Placard in California

A valid Florida handicapped placard is just as valid as a California placard under the "full faith and credit" clause of the U.S. Constitution. Fight the ticket. Send in a copy of your placard. If you have any problems, write back and I will make a federal case out of it.
