can an employer request employee to work off days without pay

Sure, they 'can' ask. However, you have a right to be paid for all time worked, and if not properly paid, a right to file claim with the Labor Commissioner. If retaliated against in any way for refusing to work without pay, you'd have the basis for a good civil suit. Feel free to contact me if you need legal help in either option.
