A notice of appeal is filed in the court that issued the appealable order or judgment. It is heard in the applicable Court of Appeal. A petition for an extraordinary writ should be filed in the Court of Appeal district in which the family law court is located. In exceptional circumstances it is possible to file a writ petition in the California Supreme Court, but that court will normally send the case back to the applicable Court of Appeal for consideration. Good luck.
