How can I file for bankruptcy when I am bankrupt myself when I can't even afford to pay high attorney fees?

The bankruptcy court has a fee waiver program to avoid the $299 filing fee if you qualify. Some filers do all the paperwork themselves, although they take the risk of doing it incorrectly and perhaps not fully protecting themselves and their assets.

If you were to shop around, you might find a lawyer who would charge a more palatable fee.

Most people who say they cannot afford a bankruptcy attorney usually forget that they will be stopping payments on their credit cards and save the money that way. Your local county bar association may have a "modest means" panel consisting of young attorneys willing to take cases at a lower fee to gain experience.
