Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Are paralegals allowed to prepare and file bankruptcy for you? I had this done years ago in 1995 and recently someone told me that they cannot do it anymore. I have found someone that will prepare the paperwork for 500 and file it for me for 299. Then I appear at the hearing. Please advise.

Only an attorney or you is permitted to make the legal decisions that preparing a bankruptcy petition requires. A paralegal or document preparation service is only permitted to type into the forms that you select the information you provide. A paralegal CANNOT decide what exemptions you should take, for example. In addition, a paralegal or document preparation service cannot file the petition for you. You will have to do that.
