Legal Question in Business Law in California

Car accident while working

My problem is, while working one day I was asked to go to the bank. I used the CFO's car to make the deposit. This is his personal car. On my way back from making the deposit I hit a wall with his car doing $850.00 in damage. The CFO gave me the estimate and expects me to pay the bill even though I was on company time making a company deposit. I feel our company insurance should cover me in this case. Any assistance you can give will be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Car accident while working

Thank you for your inquiry.

California law makes it illegal for an employer to request that you reimburse them for an accident to equipment or otherwise during an errand that is within the course and scope of employment. Incidentally, it is also illegal for an employer to deduct this from your pay.

I hope this helps, but if you have further questions, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected].

While his insurance or the company's insurance should pay for this, your job may be in the balance. In California you may be terminated for good reason, bad reason or no reason as long as not discriminatory and/or retaliation/violation of public policy. My want to discuss it with him further. Call me and we can discuss the circumstances and I can better advise. 800-685-6950
