can a company cancel an independent sales contract after 12 years without cause?

That would depend on the exact terms of the contract. If the contract provided that it would be in effect for more than 12 years, or if it contains a clause that it will not be cancelled except for specified reasons that have not occurred, then no. If it is just open ended for as long as both sides want to keep it in effect, then yes, they are free to cancel at any time without cause.
