Legal Question in Business Law in California

Duress to receive something already ours

Our company services company (B) n30. End of billing cycle and we wanted to pick up check. B told us if we don't get rid of a large amount of trash from yard wouldn't receive check. We asked for check and said we wouldn't pick up trash. They wouldn't release check. We finally gave in and went to pick up trash and disposed of it in hopes of receiving check. In process of picking up trash, our driver hit an awning and ripped small parts. Our driver and assistant with him say workers at B were guiding as they backed up. My driver claims he didn't want to back van up because he knew he would hit awning but workers insisted. B makes no claims about validity of workers guiding driver. B gave us a check but next week put stop payment and deducted amount of cost to fix awning without notice to us. We had no say in this or any other thing that happened. This has to be illegal. They forced us to do something in order for us to receive something we already earned month before, which led to awning mishap. Then they took money and used it to fix something we couldn't even get an estimate of our own for.
