Legal Question in Business Law in California

Painting

I had my house painted interiorly by a licensed contractor. I never received his license # after asking him on a number of occasions, nor did I have a mailing address for him. Overall i was unhappy with the paint job, very unprofessional, we came to an understanding and he discounted the job by 300.00. To date I have paid $400 deposit and balance of $1475 still owing. I have made many attempts to contact him and resolve the issue. My main issues were the paint job was very sloppy , wall repairs were not prepped or done properly. They even got paint on my leather chair which i will have to have professionally cleaned. Repairs that asked to have done were not. Painted only one side of doors. Paint was spilled in carpet. Also they lost the key to my bathroom door which is important because I have small children. I stopped the check called him before he cashed it to let him know , he has never returned my calls , I have told him I will pay him but we need to discuss the issues. He has never returned my CALLS. Yet i received a letter in the mail about a lien against me, can this affect the sale of my house? And what should l do about this? Thank you

Re: Painting

get an attorney to detail to you mechanic's lien law and the time limits involved in this hightly technical area --- additionally if the contractor lied to you and told you he was liscensed and was not, he has committed a fraud --- there is so much to tell you and ask you that it cannot be done in this venue --- get an attorney immediatly -- i am in the sf bay area and if you wish to consult with me 925-945-6000
