Legal Question in Business Law in California

if a party goes into a restaurant and they end up splitting the check and 3 of them run out without paying can the credit cards of the ones who payed be charged for the difference?

I would think the restauant should not charge any credit card more than the amount specified at the time the credit card authorization was signed by the cardholder.
