Legal Question in Business Law in California

I own photos and video that may be worth something on the open market. I have a contract that, determining how it is interpreted, the photos and video might or might not also be partially owned by the other individuals also. My question is this: Without first determining if that other party has any ownerships to the photos and video I shot, can I sell "my undetermined interest or portion" of the photos and videos to another party?

Sure, if they're foolish enough to buy them under those circumstances.

You would first determine if this contract -- is it some kind of joint venture or sharing agreement -- contains any restrictions, explicit or by operation of law, that would put you in breach if you endeavored to alienate your interest.

If not, then you could make a simple "quitclaim assignment" of any rights you have (if any) in the material. And let the Buyer Beware. You would disclaim any ownership and the buyer takes subject to the contract provisions (which you should share before inking the deal).
