Legal Question in Business Law in California

privacy act

I'm not sure what area the question belongs, but is it lawful to refuse any applications for credit, loans, etc., if when I apply I refuse to disclose my social security number to that agency? Any legal recourse?

Thank you.

Re: privacy act

yes, they can refuse your application as long as it is not based on you being in a protected clas such as race or religion. you dont have to give your SS# and they dont have to give you credit.

Re: privacy act

You don't have to give out your social security number, but the lender doesn't have to extend credit, either. The SSN is the basic means for locating a loan applicant's credit history, and if you refuse to give out your SSN the lender will almost certainly refuse to consider your application.
