There are various kinds of demand letter...if it is for breach of contract...it should be of one format...if it is for Labor or employment related it should be drafted differently. I draft demand letter for my clients all the time and from my experience I have seen... be very factually specific...attach exhibits, declaration. A comprehensive demand letter can go a long way!!!!

Your course of action against a city or other governmental unit to recover money owed you is often different than it would be against a private debtor/obligor. However, a few things remain constant.

First, the cause or source of the debt is critical. It may be unpaid wages, a claim under a contract to supply goods and/or services, a claim for personal injuries, for compensation for condemnation of your property, and so forth. Each type of claim has its own peculiarities.

I suggest you re-submit the question, indicating why the city owes you $10,000, what you have done so far to try to collect, and what results you have obtained.

Frequently it is necessary to follow administrative appeal routes before filing suit to recover on claims against cities and their departments. A lawyer would need to know whether administrative agencies, such as the zoning board, might be involved.
