Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

Dear LawGuru,

My sister has been an instructor for a Beauty College for almost 5 years. She just got let go 2 days ago with 10 reasons which are all lies. She confronted the school board but they had no good response for her except their silence. All of her students were outrageous and confused. Please advise what she should do.

Thanks much,

Lindsay W.

In general, unless an employee is civil service, in a union, or has a written employment contract, they are an 'at will' employee that can be disciplined or fired any time for any reason, with or without cause, explanation or notice. If she had a contract, or if the termination violated a written company policy guarantee, then she might have a claim. If so, feel free to contact me.
