Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

I was given a horse from a friend two months ago. I am now being contacted by the prior owner saying that the horse belongs to him and my friend had no rights giving it to me. Although, her signature is on back of horse registration papers and former owner signature as seller. The former own states that she forged this and he has a notarized letter that they had an agreement that if she were to not want horse anymore it would be given back to him. He now wants to come and get the horse. What do I do? I am no longer friends with person who gave me horse and cannot contact her at all to ask about this matter. I am in the middle of a mess and don't know what to do, but have spend thousands of dollars and time on this horse and want to be compensated if the horse is taken away from me.

Tell the person that it's your horse and he can go pound sand. If he shows up at your door tell him to go away.
