Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

Laws on holding ID

What are the laws behind confiscating an ID? Can you sue for having a valid ID confiscated? I had my drivers license confiscated because they believed the signature looked fake! They refused to return it to me, or work with me in any way. I asked them to call DMV or the police to confirm that my license was real, but they refused. I ended up calling the cops on them from my cell phone. When the officer arrived, he confirmed that my ID was real. I feel that I was unlawfully detained since I could not drive without my license and that I could sue for defamation since he repeatedly said out loud that my ID was fake. I am also worried about having my identity stolen. I have heard that sometimes valid IDs are confiscated so that they can record your personal information and use it for their own benefit. Was what they did legal?

Re: Laws on holding ID

If this happened to me, I would consider suing for False Imprisonment.
