Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

receipt checks at stores

Can I be detained by a security guard at a store if I refuse to submit to a receipt check and I'm carrying my purchases in a bag with the stores name on it? The question came to mind when upon visiting my local FoodsCo I had to stand in line for what I felt was an unreasonable time to submit to a check just to exit the store. There was only one guard making checks and he was checking everyone.

Re: receipt checks at stores

The stuff you purchased belongs to you and you have every right to walk right out of the store, unless you are a "member" of someplace lke Sams Club or Costco where you would have entered into a contract allowing bag searches.
