Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

Am I required by law to check my mail? If I choose not to retrieve my mail for two or three months, is that illegal in any way? I am referring to standard USPS mail, not certified or registered, not signed for. Am I legally bound to attend to mail sent to me, in a timely fashion?

You are not legally required to check your mail. However, failure to do so can be at your own peril. One caveat: If you are involved in a lawsuit, service by mail is proper and the law presumes that you received the documents that were sent to you by the other party or the court. Failure to timely and appropriately respond could put your case at risk.
