Malicious intent

There is a listing on a website for a house for sale. The site states that these homes are in foreclosure and you can take over payment without a credit check. When I called, they asked for a $199 to obtain a Title search on the property. Although I did not give them my credit card number, other people have. The company scammed them, did not return their money and are unreachable. The company has a 310 number and when we hung up on them, they left a rude message. Can any of the people who were scammed receive monetary damages and punitive damages as well for malicious intent?

I'm relieved to hear you're not that stupid. The ones who sue will find it very hard to recover any money. For example, no lawyer would touch such a case without beig paid up front. Maybe the state attorney general will go after them, but that's a longshot (and in all probability would not result in any scam victims recovering any of their losses).
