census fine

I have been threatened by a fine by the census people who are demanding very personal information. can I really be fined for not complying?

Yes. Participating in the census is mandatory. You can be punished if you refuse to answer the questions asked of you.

Fwiw, the census bureau is *very* careful not to release the information it collects, except in the form of broad statistical data. No one -- not even the IRS, the FBI, the CIA, etc. -- can see the data about individuals.
