Legal Question in Constitutional Law in California

I was wondering about journalist shield laws and if police want information from a journalist like notes, and sources names, is the journalist protected under any laws that will aid them in any way (shield laws and the USA Patriot Act?). I was reading some of the journalism shield laws and I know they are protected from in contempt of court also Im sure it depends on what media they are tied to, but I know cases of countless journalist being imprisoned for not revealing their sources.

California has a pretty good reporters' shield law, but it's hard to give you a definitive answer that will hold for all situations in all places. You could contact the Reporters' Committee for Freedom of the Press. You could also contact attorney Kelli Sager at Davis, Wright & Tremaine.
