Legal Question in Construction Law in California

Incomplete Work

I recently had my kitchen remodeled. I used a local contractor that i purchased the cabinets from and had them install. We paid in full up front but the work has yet to be completed. It has been over 2 months. I have left several messages to no avail. I have gone to the place of business and it is always closed. Is there anything i can do?

Re: Incomplete Work

Yes, file a complaint with the CSLB - the Contractors State License Board. http://www.cslb.ca.gov/ will give you all the instructions you need.

Good luck.

Re: Incomplete Work

In addition to filing a complaint with the Constactor's License Board, file a complaint with the Surety on your contractor's $10,000.00 license bond. You can get that information from the CSLB web site.

Good Luck

Re: Incomplete Work

In addition to what has been suggested by Messrs. Fruchter and Guerrini, you can also sue. Small claims court is quick, easy and cheap but is limited to $7,500. Superior Court has no limit but you'll probably have to hire a lawyer which is very expensive.

The bond claim and the CSLB complaint are probably the best venues. By the way, the bond amount goes up to $12,500 on January 1. I'm not sure, however, if the extra $2,500 will apply retroactively to damages that occurred before that date.
