Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Lrgal responsibility of a restaurant regarding their parking lot

I was verbally assaulted in a restaurant parking lot by one of their customers. This parking lot has valet service and an attendant was present at the time. The verbal assault regarded one of the employees of the restaurant. The manager claimed that the restaurant has no obligation beyond their door. What is their obligation in this matter?
