Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Maid Service Breaks Vase

We hired a large corporate, bonded maid service to clean our home on a monthly basis. Over a 1 year period we paid them over $12,000 in fees. This March they broke an art vase we received as a wedding present. We contacted them the same day and informed them they broke the vase and they denied breaking it. We tried reasoning with them (''the vase was not broken before you came and it was broken after you left'') but they refused to take responsibility. We fired them and deducted $500 from our last payment. They are now suing us in small claims court for the $500. The vase was a gift from friends in South Africa by a well-known local artist there. We obviously don't have a receipt and it is irreplaceable. Do they have a legitimate claim against us or should we fight this?

If you still can, countersue in small claims court for $7500.
