Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

2 collection agencies collecting on same debt

this is a credit card from a few years ago and we have been trying to make payment arrangements. Kept getting outrageous payment plans but would not budge. then was sold again. the last time a florida coll agcy had it and the next month baker recvy svc in cali has it now whom has filed a judgement. baker was collecting the same time as the protocol agcy was also (first agcy before baker) and now another collection agcy is collecting in andover, mass. making payments to baker and don't know what to do with the other. tried to validate debt with baker but just said over the phone that it would be that same as what he was telling me on the phone no need. how do we figure out who actually has the debt and how do i make sure payments made are accounted for, currently keeping all docs with baker an the protocol and andover agcy.
