Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Attempt to bill me for adult son's debt

Hello, I am a semi retired single senior woman in Northern California. A woman has harassed me at work twice, and also sent me a bill of $1000 from Oct. 2003 that she says my son owes her for a vehicle she transferred to him and he was supposed to work on her diesel truck for repayment. I did call her cell phone in 2003 when she traveled to Southern California right after she promised to pay my son for some work, but she never answered my calls. Now she writes that because I called her on my 39 year old sons behalf, those calls mean that I am responsible for for the debt he owes her. It doesn't seem likely that I should have to pay my sons debts, but this harassments and bills have me quite upset. Many thanks for your response.

Absent some agreement to do so, you are not obligated to pay the debts of your adult son. It might be a good idea to send her written notice that you are not going to pay, that you are not obligated to pay and to advise her not to call or communicate with you. Send it certified mail.
