Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

collection issue, I received a summons to appear in Mesa County court Grand Junction Colorado. I reside in Southern Calif. and could not afford to travel to appear. Requested an alternate method, (phone conference or change of venue) but was denied. Consequently I did not appear and was in default. Was this action by the Colorado court legal?
