Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Communication from Debt Collector

A debt collector has offered my son a deal in which he pays a portion of the total amount owed and they cancel the debt. Is this legal and how can one be sure that the debt will in deed be cancelled.

Re: Communication from Debt Collector

It is legal, but be very careful to get everything in writing. Many of these "offers" to cancel the debt are not made in good faith and they will be ignored by the collection agency.

Get it in writing from them, signed by them, and when the payment is made, check your son's credit to make sure they didnt report it anyway.
