Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Credit Card Debit

My father pasted away and I was an authorized user of his credit card. I would like to know if I am now responsible for this debt. I never signed anything.

Re: Credit Card Debit

I am sorry to hear about your father's passing, and my condolences. Regarding your question, you normally will have to be a co-signer on the card to be a joint user on the card. However, if you did not sign anything, then your father may be the only one responsible for the debt, unless there are any charges after the date of his death.

You should call the credit card company and advise them of the death of your father. Also, they may ask for a copy of the death certificate, and to be advised if a probate case is filed. You should not continue to use the credit card, as any use after your father's death you may be held responsible for, and may be held to be fraudulent use.

Best of luck, and please advise if you have any other questions.
