Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I have serious Credit Card debt due to an injury and subsequent unemployment (SDI). What recourse do Credit Card companies have on unsecured accounts when you can't make minimum payments anymore?

Credit card companies can file a lawsuit against you and, if you do not participate in the litigation, can obtain a default judgment. Once that happens, they can levy bank accounts, wages, record the judgment to lien any real property you might own, and generally make your financial life even more difficult.
