Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

credit card

My wife thought she paid off a credit card in 1999 but we didn't find out it was turned over to collections until 2006. We asked for proof of the payment history but it has sold 4 or 5 times to several different companies and they say they can't get the info. Is there a time limit on how long they can go after you.

Re: credit card

Yes, four years from the date last due, or when last paid, whichever is later. Sounds like this debt is uncollectible.
