if a creditor hires a law firm to place a judgement on me can they place a lien on my house? or what can the law firm do if the only asset i have is my home?

Yes, certainly, after they obtained a judgment in court against you, they can put a lien on your house. Unless you file a declared homestead prior to the lien. A declared homestead will protect you from future liens that are less than the sum of all your loans on the house and the homestead exemption amount. The homestead exemption amount is $50,000 for an individual, $75,000 for married couple or head of household, or $125,000 for elderly debtors over 65.
