Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Hello, I am interested in ordering a custom built furniture from LLC in another state in the US. They are asking me to pay them 60% of the amount we agreed on for the furniture set they are going to make for me. What is the best way for me to protect myself? to pay them by check or credit card? All i have is a contract from them which i don't even know is legal at this point. Thank you very much!

Credit card. If they don't send the product or it is defective, you have far greater rights to contest the charge than with a check.

P.S. Bear in mind, though, that you only have 60 days from when the charge appears on your statement to contest the charge through the credit card company. After that your rights are no different than if you had given them cash.
