Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Lein on a house that's not owned by me?

I reside with my mother (house is in her and my brothers name). One of my creditors has sent me a notice of Involuntary Lien. When I contacted the law office working on this case, I was informed that a lien as been placed on the house I reside in. I didn't know it was legally possible to have a lien placed on something that isn't in my name. Is this right or is this a scare tatic?

They can't put a lien on property that you do not own. A judgment creditor can obtain a document called an Abstract of Judgment which is recorded at the County Recorder's office. It creates a lien against an real property that is in your name. Unless you are on title to your mom's house and you don't know or unless you inherit it wnen she dies, there is no legal way for them to put a lien on the house.
