Medical bills for visiting foreign family

My mother-in-law was on a 6 month pleasure trip visa from Morocco to the US. She had a bad asthma attack and had to go to the hospital. She has no insurance or money of her own ( widow, no job, 63 years old). My wife signed an affadavit of support to get her visa. Are we stuck with the $20000 medical bills?
